If you're considering driving to the Outer Banks, here are some average travel times:
Raleigh to Buxton - 4 hours
Annapolis to Buxton - 6.5 hours
Charleston to Buxton - 8 hours
Norfolk International (ORF)
If you plan to travel by plane, we recommend you fly into Norfolk International in Norfolk, VA.
Hatteras Island is a 2.5 hour drive from Norfolk so please be very mindful of this extra travel time when selecting your flights. Norfolk is a small airport, so once you get there, things are fairly quick and easy.
From Norfolk, you will need to rent a car to drive down to the Outer Banks. It's a very scenic drive!
Check with Sara :)
There are a few different lodging options to consider when selecting lodging options. Check with Sara before you make reservations so she can confirm you are in the right location and at a nice place.
HOTELS
We recommend the Hatteras Island Inn and the Cape Pines Motel in Buxton if you only plan to stay for a night or two. They do not block rooms for weddings, but there should not be any issues with availability around the date of our wedding. Feel free to explore other hotel options, but we think these guys have decent rooms for the best prices around.
If you see a hotel you like and it looks like they're sold out online, be sure to call because they likely have some rooms they've reserved for non-online bookings.
AIR BNB
Supply is limited, but you might have some luck finding a nice apartment or studio for shorter stays on Airbnb. Look for homes in Buxton or Frisco first, Avon second.
RENTAL HOMES
Companies such as Outer Beaches Realty, Hatteras Realty, and Shore Details offer vacation homes on the Island. Look for homes in the towns of Buxton and Frisco first, and Avon second. Be mindful of check-in dates and look for houses with "turnover day" on Sunday.
If you have nerves of steel, you can wait and book just before your arrival and score a great deal on a rental home. Almost all the realty companies will let you rent for a "partial week" (like a 3-night stay) IF you book within 14 days of arrival. Mid-June is not quite the in-season, so there should be plenty of houses to choose from, if you have the guts to wait.
