Leah and Jonathan were in the same preschool class at Nierman Preschool. It was not until their final semester at Torrey Pines High School they reunited. Was it coincidence or fate? Soon after they began dating, Jim Nierman ran a background check on Jonathan and interviewed all his Jewish friends in the locker room to make sure this bachelor was fit for his daughter. The story goes that his references checked out. Leah and Jonathan were soon off to two different universities, but distance could not keep them apart. Leah ended up transferring to University of San Diego from Santa Clara University and they continued dating throughout college. Along the way, Leah mused Jonathan to study with tremendous focus, which propelled him forward in his academic career to become class valedictorian. At the same time, Jonathan opened up the world of art, culture, film, culinary arts, and language to Leah. She went from ordering chicken skewers on their first date to tuetano in Mexico City. Why are we celebrating in Cancun, Mexico? The story begins a couple generations back. Shirley Chernitsky, Jonathan’s grandma discovered Cancun in the 1970s on a camping trip when it was nothing but jungle and one boutique hotel. They (Jonathan's grandma, mom, and uncle) camped out in the jungle and on the sand, and after three months they fell in love with this paradise. There are few places in the world like the Yucatan Peninsula, which combines an incredible natural landscape with ancient history, and of course, Mexican culture. Jonathan took Leah to Cancun for his high school graduation gift, and for almost a decade, they’ve been traveling back. Cancun is their favorite place in the world and they couldn’t be more excited to get married and celebrate with their closest family and friends.
