Join us for food and drinks at 'Riverside by Pilsner' to welcome you all to not only our fun Wedding weekend but to beautiful Gdansk as well! This is a great opportunity to meet each other as we have family and friends from all over joining!
This event is not mandatory. It's simply to invite everyone to relax, have a beer/small bites and to say hello :) We will be giving out wedding itineraries for the weekend to keep you on track! We all know how Katherine likes punctuality!
Gniew is first mentioned in 1229 as a Pomeranian hill fort administered by the Cistercian abbey in Oliwa. At the turn of the 13th century it became the first stronghold of the Teutonic Order on the left riverside of the Vistula. Its strategic location allowed control of the waterway and made it home to Commanders and a Grand Master of the Order. After 1466 it came under Polish control and its most famous resident is Jan Sobieski - later King of Poland - the current record-holder (as of January 2020) for the largest cavalry charge in history (18,000 horsemen downhill in 1683) ending the Second Siege of Vienna. Most importantly for us, this victory was celebrated with the invention of the croissant (from the crescents on the fallen Ottoman flags) and the bagel (shaped like a stirrup).

A very important song to learn is 'Sto lat!' It is often used to wish someone longevity or good fortune, or as a toast, without the song. However, the use of 'Sto lat!' in this manner will often lead to the song being sung by those present. If you want learn the song “Sto lat” I helped translate phoenetically (as best as possible). There is a YouTube clip below to help you walk through sounding it out!
Sto lat (Polish)
Sto lat, sto lat, (stow lat, stow lat)
Niech żyje, żyje nam. (nyeh Zee-yeh, Zee-yeh, nom)
Sto lat, sto lat, (stow lat, stow lat)
Niech żyje, żyje nam, (nyeh Zee-yeh, Zee-yeh, nom)
Jeszcze raz, jeszcze raz, (Yesh-che raz, yesh-che raz)
Niech żyje, żyje nam, (nyeh Zee-yeh, Zee-yeh, nom)
Niech żyje nam! (nyeh Zee-yeh, nom)
Sto Lat (English translation)
100 years, 100 years,
May s/he live, live for us.
100 years, 100 years,
May s/he live, live for us.
Once again, once again,
May s/he live, live for us,
May s/he live for us!
Lasting through the night of the wedding party is certainly an accomplishment, but it does not mean your wedding experience is over!
Polish weddings can include a second day of partying and historically some wedding parties lasted three or four days! This follow-up reception – called “poprawiny” (PO-PRA-VEEN-EH) typically consists of more eating, drinking and good cheer ☺️
Cocktails and dinner will start at 7:00PM.
We will have a variety of buffet style options however if you have special dietary needs, please let us know and we will try to accommodate you.
Get some rest on Sunday morning and bring your dancing shoes for wedding 2.0 festivities!
Love, Katherine and Roger
