The River North, Streeterville and Magnificent Mile neighborhoods will be closest to Fourth Presbyterian Church and the Chicago Illuminating Company. All three areas are also very centrally located and within close proximity to all the main attractions in downtown Chicago and public transportation.

Alternative options are the West Loop, which is just west of downtown and where many of the most famous Chicago restaurants and bars are located. Lincoln Park and Old Town are two historic neighborhoods just north of downtown that offer a neighborhood experience with easy access to downtown via the “L” along with many popular restaurants and sites (Second City/Lincoln Park Zoo). The Ukrainian Village, Wicker Park, and Bucktown areas are located northwest of downtown and offer access to some of the City’s best restaurants and nightlife.

Transportation

Chicago "L"

The Chicago “L” is the subway system in Chicago and provides easy access to many of the sights and attractions in Chicago. Fares cost $2.50 and fare cards can be purchased at any of the stations in Chicago. All of the lines meet and loop around downtown Chicago. The Red line is the main train line in Chicago and runs north and south along Lake Michigan. The Brown line serves the northern neighborhoods, the Blue line serves the northwestern neighborhoods and O’Hare airport, the Green line and Blue line serve the western neighborhoods and the Orange line serves the southwestern neighborhoods and Midway airport. Most trains arrive every 5-10 minutes but you can track the various trains here. Google maps also provides a public transit option which is helpful for navigating the city buses and train lines.

City Buses

Chicago has a vast network of city buses that complement the “L” and provide access to many of the sights and attractions in Chicago. Tickets are $2.50 and can be paid with a fare card purchased at an “L” stop, any CVS or Walgreens or paid with cash (exact change only). The 151 bus is the primary bus line that runs along Michigan Avenue and to the northern neighborhoods and provides access to Fourth Presbyterian Church, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Lincoln Park Zoo. The 146 bus runs along Michigan Avenue and State Street and provides access in the south to the Museum Campus and expresses north from Michigan Avenue to Belmont Avenue near Wrigley Field. You can track the various buses here. There are many more buses than what we’ve noted above and Google maps is a great way to find the best option.

Divvy Bikes

Chicago's bike share program is called Divvy. The bikes can be found all around the city and also along the lakeshore path. Rides are $3 for 30min or $15 for the day.

Parking

Parking in Chicago can be stressful and expensive so we’ve included a short guide to help. There are many parking garages scattered around downtown Chicago which generally cost $40+ for the day and more for overnight parking. Spothero and other apps may provide access to lower cost options and help with navigating the different parking garages. Metered parking in Chicago is available downtown and throughout the city and costs between $2 and $8 per hour. ParkChicago is the app for the metered parking in Chicago and allows you to pay for the meter from your phone or you can pay at the automated booths on city streets. The metered parking is generally free overnight with a few exceptions near downtown.

Note: If you are driving to Chicago rather than flying and are comfortable leaving your car parked for a few days there is free street parking near the Lincoln Park Zoo on Stockton and in the area north of the Zoo and east of Clark Street and Broadway. There are other areas in Chicago that offer free street parking but be mindful that some do require permits.
