Getting to Orcas Island
Ok, we admit, Orcas Island is not the easiest place to get to! But we promise you, it's well worth the trip! It's our favorite spot in the Pacific Northwest and we really want to make it as easy as possible for you to enjoy your time here so here's everything you need to know.
The quickest and most scenic option is to fly to Orcas Island directly from Seattle via Kenmore Air.
As well as giving you the opportunity to take in the stunning natural beauty you'll also save yourself the cost and hassle of a rental car and ferry booking. There is no need for a car on the island for any wedding-related activities. Kenmore Air offers door to door service directly from SeaTac to Eastsound/Orcas Island including a shuttle to Boeing Field (smaller airport in Seattle).
Once you arrive on the island, the airport is about a half mile from Eastsound. There is NO Uber on Orcas, but you can arrange to have a taxi transport you from the airport to your accommodations.
If flying isn't for you, you will need to make your way to Anacortes to catch the ferry to Orcas Island. It's approximately 2 hours away from Seattle and there aren't a lot of convenient public transport options so we have detailed the two easiest ways for you to get there.
By Car
If you are arriving in a group and want to have a car on the island this will be a more affordable option. If you plan to bring a car on the ferry, reservations MUST be booked ahead of time. See Ferry Travel section.
If you plan to drive we suggest that you arrive into Seattle the day before you head up to the island.
The drive from Seattle to Anacortes is around 2 hours depending on traffic. You will need to plan to arrive at the ferry terminal AT LEAST 45 minutes prior to ferry departure. Your reservations will be cancelled if you are not checked in on time and you will not get on the boat.
Alternatively, walking on any ferry is easy and parking a car at the ferry terminal for the weekend is an affordable option (about $10/night). You do not need a reservation to walk on the ferry. Transportation from the Orcas ferry terminal to Eastsound (about a 20 minute drive) can be arranged. There is no need for a car on the island for any wedding-related activities.
In the summer months, the parking lot gets full very quickly and you will probably have to park in the overflow parking and walk down the hill. If you have a lot of luggage and people, dropping off at the terminal before you go and park may be the easier option. Again, leave yourselves plenty of time. There is a small bar & coffee shop in the terminal where you can pass some time while waiting.
Once you make it to Anacortes, you will need to catch the ferry to Orcas. You can do this by driving on or as a passenger, both require different levels of preparation so you need to decide well in advance.
To take your car you will need to make a reservation on April 23 either online or by calling 1-888-808-7977. These reservations become available at 7am PST and will be gone within the hour.
