Travel to Kefalonia
Kefalonia (sometimes written Cephalonia) is part of the Ionian group of Greek islands and is the largest island in the Ionian.
Devon's late grandfather "Papou" was Greek and was born and raised in Kefalonia. His grandmother, Celia, still lives on the island. In 2008 Devon spent a year on the island. During this time he served in the Greek Army (in a different location) and then spent the rest of the time enjoying the island, helping locals work the land and spending time with his grandmother. It was during this year that he fell in love with Kefalonia.
Kefalonia was always one place that Devon wanted to take me to visit, and in 2020, I was fortunate to travel with Devon to Kefalonia to experience the island. It was during this trip that we got engaged (see "cover" tab - how blue is that water!) and knew we wanted to bring as many family and friends back with us one day to celebrate our wedding.
Well the day is nearly upon us and we do hope that those who are able to join us, fall in love with Kefalonia as much as we have. ♡
There are many ways to get to Kefalonia and the island has its own airport, Kefalonia International Airport "Anna Pollatou," which is only 8km away from the island's main city, Argostoli. The airport code is EFL.
You can fly to Kefalonia directly during summer, as its airport is international. It is also easy to reach Kefalonia via Athens or Thessaloniki. Flights to Kefalonia from Athens are about 1 hour long. You can also fly to Kefalonia from two other Ionian islands, Lefkada and Zakynthos (Zante).
If you are coming from Europe, you should be able to get a direct flight into Kefalonia.
For those traveling from other places, I would recommend looking at different options to get the best deal and your ideal flight:
1. Flights directly to Kefalonia (there will likely be 1 or 2 layovers enroute, depending on where you live) or
2. Flying into Athens and then booking an internal flight from Athens to Kefalonia. This often works out cheaper. Note that in most instances, you will need to check out through security and passport control and then check back in for your internal flight. So leave some time between the two flights to do so (and make sure that your internal flight offers baggage options).
Travelers Tip: Use a site such as Skyscanner to compare the different flight options. Sort by fastest time / cheapest price / least number of layovers to find your ideal flight.
Or if you would like to work with a travel agent, my cousin Vivienne Olwyn, located in Johannesburg, can assist you with your flight booking. You can reach her via Whatsapp on +27 82 452 3145 or on her email Vivienne@xlfairmount.co.za
Greece is a Schengen State and a member of the EU. Therefore, you are required to obtain a Schengen visa to visit Greece if your passport requires you to do so.
Here is some information on applying for a Schengen visa.
As Greece is a member of the European Union, Euros are accepted in Greece. On the island of Kefalonia there are many ATM's where you can draw cash and the majority of shops and restaurants accept debit / credit card payments. Note that Amex is not accepted everywhere and therefore it is important to travel with a backup.
