How we met
Shy Muslim, introverted, intelligent gentleman, down to earth, simple, happy, interesting man meets extroverted bunjee jumper, dolphin swimmer, lion walker, biker and risk taker in a very remote refugee settlement in Uganda. Just when the two of them put their heads down to concentrate on the work ahead of them; little did they know that love was about to be struck between them.
Havana: " I wonder if this man would ever marry a non-Muslim lady?"
Everesto: " I wonder if this lady could ever convert into a Muslim.... it will be a tough ask, with tattoos, opinionated crazy go lucky kinda girl... wooow... Just forget the thought's Everesto".
Somehow, despite it all.....here we are now..
August is surely a special month for us....
We found love in a hopeless place giving hope to others..

It was the beginning of August 2018, a hot sunny day. I walked in late to the boardroom and there was a Mission on Ground to conduct resettlement activities on behalf of the American government. Everesto was seated adjacent to me and he looked kind of sleepy (they had a long drive from Kampala to Kyaka- plus I came to learn much later that he usually sleeps during meetings; but he has a digital memory and remembers everything)...
After the meeting, I went to shake hands and introduce myself as I walked in late. Everyone shook my hand. Everesto refused to shake my hand and just nodded at me with a lovely smile and polite warm look.
"Why won't you shake my hand? Ebola has not reached here yet. Or are you being extra cautious?" I asked curiously..
"I am a Muslim Havana. I don't shake women's hands or hug women. Sorry if you are offended" replied Everesto with a concerned look.
"It's okay, I respect that. But I guess I haven't spent much time with 'proper' Muslim men I suppose" fidgeting to myself as now I was embarrassed.
I mean how could I have known he was Muslim? It's not like it's written all over his face. Actually, if I paid enough attention that day; I would have seen the mark on his forehead from all the praying and I would have saved myself the embarrassment.
I walked away a little bit disappointed and mad at myself for not knowing better but I turned around and whispered "I know I will hug you one day... " with a smile on my face (where he saw my peeking tooth the right side of my mouth).
"Well, I can't wait to see that happen! You will be the first!" he managed to mutter from under his breath.
Well one week later; Everesto and his male colleagues came to my room to use my blender to make fruit juice. They walked in when I was re-playing my bunjee jump, slide and swing video as I had just come from Victoria Falls in Zambia. I remember Eversto was the quietest and kept looking at me like I was mad...
"Wait!!! Havana is that a lion you are walking with?"
"Did you just say that the bungee jump was better than an orgasm? You do realize it was captured on the video right?" exclaimed Everesto with a sexy look on his face..
Then Everesto (I knew him as Mogaka then) walked away to the kitchen.
I followed him to the kitchen as I left the other three guys replaying my bungee jump video. I secretly hugged him from behind unexpectedly and he stood there and didn't' say anything.
"I told you I will hug you one way or another.." I told him..
I smiled and walked away.. That was the beginning of our love..
Now I always find myself hugging him from behind, especially when I catch him off guard in the kitchen...
Now we love the kitchen:)

Lying on the beach on March 1 2019 at The Sands Hotel in Zanzibar; the sun was nice and hot as we lay under a beach bed. Sipping on Juice and reminiscing on life, Everesto wanted a swim.
"I need to learn how to be an excellent swimmer" yelled Everesto, from a few feet away, his feet already in the water ocean water..
"I am sure you will gorgeous" I shouted back, as I was so engrossed in a book (my thing by the way whenever I am on the beach).
Taking a shower after all the sand that got caught on us, Everesto asked out of the blue "Do you already know that I consider you to be my wife?"
"What did you say?" with soap in my eyes " That you want me to be your wife?" I managed to answer back.
"Well come to think of it, from day one, I told you Havana, I don't need to date you for years to know I want to spend the rest of my life with you. That's a waste of time. We shall just work on it as we move along. So yeah you are my wife. I feel it already" assured Everesto to Havana.
"Well, I guess we are husband and wife then!!!! More like eternal energy soul mates.." I said loudly satisfied.
"Oh, by the way, sorry to burst the bubble, Muslims don't give wedding rings as a sign of engagement, I mean you can wear a ring but not because it symbolizes a wedding ring okay!" said Everesto in a witty tone.
"Well since you know me so well.... I am GETTING A WEDDING RING!!! That we shall NOT compromise on" I said stubbornly. "By the way, I love calling you Mogaka".. with a cheekily grin on my face..
And that is how the journey continued.......... Now how can you say no to darling Havana eh!
