About Aiken

We are thrilled to welcome you to Aiken, S.C. — Ashley’s hometown — for the wedding weekend. Voted Best Small Town by Southern Living’s annual reader polls in 2018 and as a finalist in 2020, Aiken is a quaint Southern town with a rich history and highly-touted equestrian scene. Named after railroad president William Aiken Sr., Aiken’s early days were known as a winter colony spot for wealthy Northern sports enthusiasts and a health resort for Charlestonians looking to escape the heat in the summer. Legend has it, that a railroad surveyor added a stop in Aiken in order to marry the daughter of a local planter who had his eyes on increased business — the stop was placed on his property. The town of 30,000 people is dotted with polo fields and sprinkled throughout with history and tradition. Don’t be surprised if someone on horse crosses the road while you’re at a stop light. We hope you fall in love with the charm of Aiken.

Getting Here

Aiken is a short drive from Columbia and Charleston.

If you are joining us from outside of South Carolina, we suggest flying into either the Augusta or the Columbia airport, both just a short drive to Aiken!

Dining: Lunch

You know Ashley and Chad are serious when it comes to good food. Aiken might be a small town, but there is no shortage of great local eateries. Check out some of their favorite spots (and go-to items) below. Reservations are encouraged as many restaurants have limited avaliabilty.

NEW MOON CAFE
An Aiken staple, this local coffee shop and cafe has an eclectic vibe with local art lining the walls. It’s always busy, but the wait is never too long. Go here for coffee, smoothies or brunch. Pro tip: there is additional seating along the hallway in the back!
→ Ashley’s pick: the Downtown Mess, Aiken Style (pimento cheese grits with grilled ham).

A PIZZA DI NAPOLI
An eight-minute drive from downtown Aiken, the pizzeria is the only in NC, SC & GA to be honored with the prestigious and distinct Certification of True Neapolitan Pizza from the highly coveted AVPN in Naples Italy. The owners bring their Italian roots to the forefront, and are passionate in providing a great experience as it is considered one of the best in town.
→ Chad’s pick: Capricciosa.
→ Ashley’s pick: margherita.

WHAT'S COOKIN'
A family-owned restaurant that has been serving fresh-cooked meals in downtown Aiken for as long as Ashley can remember.
→ Chad’s pick: The burger.

WING PLACE
A seven-minute drive from downtown Aiken, Wing Place has the best wings in town. A casual spot that’s good for catching a game. Ashley’s brother, Josh (the wing expert in the family) recommends the wings hot or Creeper Reaper, if you think you can handle it. When you’re here, you’re close to Ashley’s high school, South Aiken, and middle school, Kennedy (where her mom is now teaching).
→ Chad’s pick: picklepenos and Dick’s Fingers.
→ Ashley’s pick: house salad, add fried chicken and switch the dressing for White Wine Vinaigrette.

PAT'S
Fresh subs + sandwiches, well known as the best chicken salad in town!
→ Ashley’s pick: Big tub of chicken salad.

BETSY'S AROUND THE CORNER
With an old-school soda fountain atmosphere, Betsy’s is known for their milkshakes and blue-plate dinners. You can drop in anytime — no reservations required.

CINDI'S SWEET SHOPPE
Stop in this cute, nostalgic candy shop for a quick sweet treat or a glass bottle Coke. From house-made artisan truffles to fine chocolates and fudges, you’ll find something for all tastes.

Dining: Dinner

CASABELLA'S

→ Ashley's pick: lobster ravioli or chicken saltimbocca.

MACALUSO'S
A few blocks from Laurens St, Macaluso's is located in a cute historic building (that formerly housed the iconic Linda's Bistro). The recenly opened spot has house-made Italian dishes. Go for dinner; reservations recommended.

MALIA'S
This fine-dining spot is one of the oldest in Aiken, serving downtown Aiken for over 30 years. Located on Lauren’s Street, the eatery is known for sourcing locally or ethically produced products. Reservations are recommended.

THE WHITNEY
Owners Scott and Angela Richardson named the dining establishment in honor of William C. Whitney, who was an avid sportsman and leading member of the "Aiken Winter Colony." He established the Whitney Trust in 1901 to promote sports such as golf and polo. He was called "Aiken's most distinguished citizen" at his death in 1904. Go for dinner and call for reservations.

THE STABLES AT ROSE HILL
Recently renovated, this historic inn and restaurant is slightly off the beaten path. The atmosphere and charm of the property is worth a visit itself! The menu shifts seasonally; reservations recommended.

PRIME STEAKHOUSE
Aiken's local steakhouse, Prime is set in a historic yet contemporary atmosphere. Go for dinner; reservations recommended.

WHISKEY ALLEY
A newer jaunt in the downtown Aiken dining scene. The small eatery has a long bar — go for drinks, brunch or dinner and don’t forget to make a reservation.
→ Ashley's pick: Cantonese Green Beans

SOLO VINO
Despite its name, this is more than just a wine bar that joined the downtown dining scene in spring 2019. With a small dining room and full dinner menu, reservations are recommended.
→ Ashley’s pick: the menu shifts with the season, but the risotto is wonderful if it’s available.

TAKOSUSHI
You may know TakoSushi in Columbia, but trust us when we say it hits differently in Aiken. This was a solid pre-prom dinner spot, and Ashley’s first liking to sushi (the Susan roll is really just fried goodness, and certainly not meant to be authentic).
→ Ashley’s pick: fried asparagus, Susan, unforgettable and dynamite rolls.

Downtown Aiken: Shopping

Don’t miss downtown Aiken, only a short stroll from the Willcox. Laurens Street is the main drag lined with local boutiques, restaurants and antique stores. The pedestrian-only alleyway is a can’t miss. And there is no metered parking.

CAROLINE'S & PITTER PATTER
A boutique that carries the cutest children’s clothing (the Pitter Patter side) and a section for Women’s clothing and accessories (the Caroline’s side). Ashley worked at this boutique for several years during high school where her gift-wrapping skills were taken to the next level and her philosophy of “saving money on a sale” was established.
