Events are private

Please Log in

Aiken is known for its equestrian culture! We'd like to bring a little bit of that to our wedding weekend with a polo scrimmage for all to attend.

We would be watching local teams play a scrimmage — it will be 3 vs 3 (so a slightly lower number of players than in a traditional match). It will be a semi-private event as the game is being set just for our wedding guests to enjoy, but the players may have family and friends that attend as well.

The event, of course, would be outside. You can drop in and learn a little bit about polo while taking in one of Aiken's favorite past times.

Special thanks to Matt Catchpole, GM of Terra, and Tiger Kneece, director of the Aiken Youth Polo Program, for making this possible!

Location

The practice scrimmage will take place at New Bridge Polo Club! We will be in Arena 1, which is just before the Club House. We will be the only party out there, so if you see a group, it should be us! Text/call Ashley (803.646.7793). or Chad (803.917.4117) if you are having trouble finding us.

There is a berm just above the arena which allows for a great view.

What to Bring

There is no seating in the arena, so please bring your own lawn chairs or picnic blankets or pop open your tailgate.

We will have a large charcuterie board to share and some light beverages, but there will not be food/beverage service on site. Please bring your own snacks/beverages if you would like anything specific or don't feel comfortable eating from a communal table. Yes, alcohol is allowed. :)

Restrooms

Restrooms will be available in the Club House, a short walk from the arena.

Parking

Plenty of parking is available, and we will be watching from our car areas — sort of like a tailgate.

Transportation

The Willcox's sprinter van will be available to drop guests off at the polo match and bring them back to the Willcox or downtown Aiken.

To catch a ride, simply head to the Willcox and let their front desk employees know.

If you plan to drink, please do not drive.

What to do after polo

After the polo match if you are staying in Aiken that night, please make a dinner reservation.

After dinner, we'd love to meet you all at a downtown bar. There are lots of options in "The Alley" (i.e. Alley SW) — a pedestrian-only street. For now, the meeting place will be Whiskey Alley (but it's small, so we may move to Aiken Brewing Company). Text Ashley or Chad for more details!

All are invited to attend a welcome cocktail hour that will take place at the pool area of the Willcox. Libations and small bites will be provided.

In case of rain, we will move this to the Library and Hunt Room of the Willcox.

All are welcome to join the bride and groom at the Rose Hill Estate for a night cap.

To keep things simple and easy, we ask that everyone please be responsible for themselves.

Safety

What COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place?

The safety of our loved ones is our top priority! We will continue to monitor the situation and incorporate the latest safety measures. The Willcox, venue for both the ceremony and reception, has an incredibly thorough set of safety measures. See below for a list of safety precautions that will continue to be updated.

We encourage all guests to get tested and then quarantine up to two weeks before the wedding celebrations. We recognize that quarantining is not possible for all, but we ask that you avoid high-risk activities as much as possible before the wedding.

As of Dec. 2020, the following safety measures are planned:
- The ceremony and dance floor will be completely outside, and the cocktail hour and reception will have both indoor and outdoor activities. No one will have to congregate inside if they are not comfortable.
- All food stations will have sneeze guards, and each dish is plated by a chef to ensure that guests aren't touching food or serving utensils.
- The cake on display will be for display only. An edible cake will be sliced in the back of the house rather than sitting out in the open.
- Sanitizer will be available at all celebration locations.
- High touch point areas throughout the public areas in the hotel, restaurant and spa are being sanitized at regular intervals throughout the day.
- UV light is used to enhance sanitation in all areas of the hotel including but not limited to antique furniture, fabric, carpet and draperies.
- All service staff will wear masks at all times. Due to a City of Aiken ordinance, guests must wear a face mask upon entering, checking-in and while moving through all indoor public areas of the hotel. Face masks can be removed once seated to dine.
Find more safety measures at The Willcox's website: https://thewillcox.com/covid-19/

Attire

Black tie attire is encouraged.

We anticipate the celebrations to be quite lively, so we encourage you to leave the little ones behind. Thank you for understanding!

Timeline

Guests may begin to take their seats at 4:30 p.m. The ceremony will begin promptly at 5:00 p.m. with the reception to follow at the same property.

Transportation

We will provide transportation to/from all hotels listed on our accommodations page. Aiken does not regularly have Uber or Lyft, but it does have an active taxi cab system. You can reserve taxis in advance if you are not staying in one of the accommodations listed on our site. It's very important to us that everyone have a good time and stay safe. Please do not drive if you are planning to drink.

As more details are arranged, we will add them here.

Parking

Parking that is regularly available in front of the Willcox will not be available as the road will be blocked for wedding celebrations. The Willcox will provide alternate options for parking — details will be added as they are secured.

About the Willcox

The Willcox, a white-pillared Colonial Revival landmark on the National Historic Register, has been a permanent fixture in the resort town of Aiken, South Carolina since 1898. Starting with the inviting rocking chairs lining its pristine, white-columned front porch, The Willcox represents the casual glamour of a bygone era.

All are welcome to enjoy brunch at the Willcox. Chad and Ashley along with immediate family will be in the lobby to mingle with those who attend brunch or bid farewell to those who are checking out.

To keep things simple and easy, we ask that everyone please be responsible for themselves. Please make a reservation as the Willcox's brunch books up in advance.
