THINGS TO DO

Piazza del Duomo in Florence can be considered the heart of the city. It is a complex that includes five places you can visit: the Church of Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo), the Baptistery, Giotto’s Bell Tower, and the Museo dell’Opera. There is a single ticket to visit all the monuments of Piazza Duomo. For details and opening hours see the www.museumflorence.com.

In Via dei Calzaiuoli there are numerous shops and a very beautiful church that is worth a visit, the Church of Orsanmichele (free admission). Head over to the Loggia del Porcellino, sometimes called the “New Market” (though it’s been here for over a century), with many stalls and souvenir stands. Locate the Porcellino (a bronze-boar fountain): it is said to bring good luck if you insert a coin in its mouth and it falls into the grate at the foot of the fountain.

Piazza della Signoria, the civic centre of the city is dominated by Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of government that was built between 1290-1300. Today it is home to the Florence City Council and much of it is visitable as a museum. Palazzo Vecchio is not the only point of interest of Piazza della Signoria: here you can admire real works of art in the open air in the Loggia dei Lanzi.

Take the time to visit one of the closed food markets in the center of Florence. San Lorenzo Market is the largest and oldest one, here you’ll get the chance to live the real florentine feel… you will smell, see and touch the freshest products and above all you will get to taste whatever catches your attention.

Your time may be limited but it would be a shame to come to Florence and not see the Uffizi, which contains some of the most important works of Italian Renaissance painting.
I also don’t think you can go to Florence and not see Michelangelo’s sculpture David at Galleria dell’Accademia which is very close to the monumental Duomo.

Opificio delle Pietre Dure museum: don’t know what it is? then you’ll be very pleasantly surprised at this little treasure, not visited by many!

Visit the San Lorenzo Church particularly its Medicean library (where you can admire more of Michelangelo’s work on the staircase and inside) and Medici Chapels.

Santa Maria Novella church is another one of those “hard to miss” sights in Florence, mainly due to its grandeur and size. This is the principal Franciscan church in Florence and as such is a very important landmark in the city.

The Pitti Palace has 5 museums within, plus the Boboli gardens behind it: you CANNOT visit them all, unless you have more days in Florence so ... take your pick! D

Don’t miss Piazzale Michelangelo to enjoy the best view of Florence ever which is particularly beautiful at sunset!
